If We Could Build A Senior From Scratch, We Would Build Nick.

How to build a senior…..  Hmmmmm.  Well we’d start with some nice, add some smart, toss in a dose of passion, maybe some good looks (but that’s an optional ingredient), and we’d wrap it in a great family before we pop it in the oven to bake.  And hey look!  It appears we would build Nick!  Nick is a guy you just want to be around – just an all around good dude who is smart and dedicated as all get out to his twin passions baseball and football which he plans to play one of at the next level.  Heck he took one (?) day off transitioning from one to the other as he readies himself for his senior season as a captain at West Bloomfield playing in “The Swamp” (more on that later).  Actually you may remember Nick from his spokesmodel session and you may even remember his sister Emma who was a Frameable senior too!  What a great family – and mom Teresa is a delight too – she even reprised her role briefly guest hosting some of the behind the scenes live streaming (more on that later too hehe)!  So let’s get to it.

We Would Build Nick

It was nice to be able to get outside in the nice weather for a change with our guy since the last time we were on location with Nick he was being pelted by snow!  We focused first in downtown Birmingham for a few urban shots which came out really cool:

Build Nick

Great shot!  Very cool little stairwell we found…

We also have plenty of behind the scenes fun as usual…  first we went live on Facebook – don’t miss Nick’s awesome sign off at the end… hehe…..

Okay let’s take a look at a couple more photos from the city…

Build Nick

Plenty of walls and cool surfaces to use in Birmingham and Nick was prepared with the full pop up wardrobe suitcase for a few outfit changes.

Build Nick

Just chillin’…

To The Swamp!

At this point it was time to head over to WBHS – to “The Swamp” where they had just finished installing the brand new turf at the stadium which does indeed include the words “The Swamp” written across the turf on the home sideline!  They have a pretty rowdy and dedicated student section at the home football games!  We went live on YouTube for this segment (I didn’t realize I had my screen lock on at the beginning – but that’s LIVE – you just go with it).  The “Teresa Takeover” happens around the 6 minute mark!

And here is an awesome shot of Nick on the very field he and his Laker teammates plan to dominate this fall!

Build Nick

So there you have it!  Nick’s session rocked and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!  If we were going to build a senior from scratch we would definitely build Nick!

We Are Smitten By Sophia and Her Senior Session!

Yes we are smitten by Sophia!  She’s a sweetheart and we had a fantastic senior session with her this week!  There’s a fun backstory here as her mom Rebecca found us on Periscope while watching our Doug & Ally Morning Show, and it’s always fun when we connect with people who tune in from close by so we can meet them easily in person.  And one more funny tidbit here – I saw Sophia the day before her session at her place of work and I was so preoccupied that it didn’t even register when she said “hi” – and when she followed it up with “I’m so excited for my senior pictures tomorrow” I said “Sophia!!!!”  Haha…

Smitten By Sophia

Meanwhile Sophia was totally prepared for the session and when she walked in with a great wardrobe selection and her makeup done by Mandy Rose we were, well, smitten!  So let’s get to a few of the photos shall we?

We started in the studio on the black background with the “black and blowy” setup with the fan:

Sophia

Stunning right?

As usual we have some fun behind the scenes video from the live broadcasts we did at the time, starting with a Facebook Live broadcast:

Let’s take a peek at one more studio shot on that pink background before we head out…

Sophia

Heading out to Quarton Lake

We actually got lucky with the weather because the forecast had been threatening scattered thunderstorms for days but it didn’t happen!  These next two shots are awesome – starting with this shot at one of our fave spots:

Sophia

Once again I’ll point out how well Sophia made use of her wardrobe – this flowery top is perfect for summer and this setting!

Now let’s take a look at our outdoor broadcast this time from YouTube Live while we were getting the shot above.  Feel free to skip through my and Ally’s silliness in the middle haha…

And we have one more photo to share with the waterfall as a backdrop – the purple coordination here is the topper – just adorable!

Sophia

You can see why we were “smitten with Sophia” – what a session!  We were pretty excited to share these and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day!

Quinn And Our Quest For Quality Locations On Her Senior Session!

Quinn is a Qaracter (see what I did there?).  Haha – a character in the best way!  She’s smart, funny, unique and beautiful and she was totally into this session!  She made it a lot of fun to photograph her and her mom Linda is kind of awesome too.  We laughed a lot on this session and most notably for us we found several new spots to photograph in Birmingham that were right under our noses but we never noticed them!  Our quest was surely a success and we’re excited to share the highlights!!!

First in the studio…

We started in the studio but that doesn’t mean the photo we have here is any less uniquely Quinn – we hadn’t quite used this combination before with this floor, this chair, and the black backdrop…  Love this:

Quinn

The browns and earth tones – so cool!  She looks fantastic!

We also have our behind the scenes broadcast replays from our day – first on Periscope from the studio, and if you want to be a part of our shows there you can download the link and follow us at @FrameableFaces here, or if you just want to watch from twitter you can do that as well!

Quinn and our Quest…

Here’s where it even gets more fun – we headed to Birmingham for the location photos and Ally just happened to notice that there was actually a pretty cool fence at the edge of a parking lot we use all the time.  It’s perfect!  It’s “Quinn’s Fence” now since that’s how we roll – we name new spots after the senior who pioneered them!

QuinnAwesome.

Here is the broadcast from this portion of the session (kinda funny – a couple of Howard Stern Show references and a couple salty drivers…) this time from Facebook Live!

We also found another spot we walk by all the time – a door behind glass that gives a cool effect and, well – Quinn is just a pro….

Quinn

At this point we headed over to Quarton Lake (no not an excuse to get another Q word in here lol) to get a few more shots with what light we had left – the conditions were great and the lighting perfect…  Here is the Periscope replay:

…and here is the amazing result!

Quinn

So there it is.  A successful quest with Quinn indeed to produce a spectacular session!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Showing Off Some Senior Pics – Yes We Are Brandishing Brandon!

To brandish is “to wave or flourish (a weapon) in a triumphant, threatening, or ostentatious way” and in this case we are brandishing Brandon – his senior photos that is, because Ally’s “weapon” is a Canon 5D Mark III, the photos are awesome, and so that does make this indeed a “triumph”!  At least we think so…  Haha!

We photographed Brandon’s sister Lindsey for her senior session a couple years ago (not to mention for years before that for her dance photos) and we’ve known Brandon for a few years so we were happy to get the call from his mom Michelle that they were returning!  Brandon is a great kid – soft spoken but driven and we enjoyed being with him a lot!  So let’s get to the photos…!

Brandishing Brandon

We started out in the studio on the black background and this first photo is great in black and white!

Brandishing Brandon

So cool…

We also have some behind the scenes action for you – here is the replay of our studio broadcast on Periscope – if you want to be a part of our live broadcasts there you can download the app and follow us at @frameablefaces at this link, and if you prefer to just watch from twitter you can do that here.

Now let’s continue to our location photos in Birmingham where we got some natural photos and some city photos – we’ll start with the natural setting…

Brandishing Brandon

There was a little chill in the air on this day but overall the conditions were fine and the lighting was great…  We broadcasted a little more at this spot, this time on Facebook Live, and it was around this time that Michelle had to run back to the van to get something – she had a little trouble with the car alarm and she caused a bit of a ruckus… haha!!!

One more by the stream…

Brandishing Brandon

Awesome!

At this point we headed over to downtown Birmingham to get some brick and textures where we captured this close up:

Brandishing Brandon

And there it is – brandishing Brandon – triumphantly as the definition suggests!  We think his session rocked and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!

Kylie Killed It On Her Senior Session – Not Even Kinda Kidding

Kylie killed it on her senior session.  What does that mean exactly?  It means she owned it, slayed it, rocked it, kicked major butt, looked amazing, had fun – you know, all of that stuff.  It wasn’t the first time Kylie had been in front of Ally’s camera since she used to come here to the studio for dance photos, but this was completely different.  We planned this session out with an epic sprawl of locations, technique, timing, style and general awesomeness.  Kylie’s mom Kelly joined us and we had a great time – we’ve been excited to show these!

First In The Studio…

We started out in the studio where we worked with our signature “black and blowy” setup which we love – sometimes black clothes against the black backdrop looks so cool when you know how to light it, and Kylie looks beautiful here…

Kylie Killed

Stunning!

Before we head out to the location photos let’s take a look at some of the behind the scenes fun from our day shall we?  First we have our 6 second looping Vine:

Next we have the replay of our live Periscope / Twitter broadcasts for a more extended view of the session!  If you haven’t downloaded the Periscope app or followed us on Twitter you can do that here and here.

First we have the studio broadcast…

And next the beach broadcast – really more of our walk to the beach – we’ll get to those photos in a sec…

Kylie Killed It…

So as you can tell the session got off to a good start in the studio and the location photos followed suit!  First we headed over to Birmingham to get a few photos in the city like this one:

Kylie Killed

Then to finish up we headed over to Dodge Park at Cass Lake to get a couple photos at the beach and with the water in the background – these are fabulous and this was Kylie’s idea!

Kylie Killed

We’ll leave you with this one with a pretty sailboat that came right into the frame – very cool!

Kylie Killed

So yeah Kylie killed it as you can see, and we are thrilled with the results!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

This Bold Business of Being Brandon Has Its Benefits!

The bold business of being Brandon ain’t so bad.  It’s actually a pretty good gig – goes to a great school and plays in the marching band there, great parents, a brother, a dog….  and he’s a good dude!  On top of all that he was totally psyched for some photography fun for his senior pictures.  He was totally prepared which is a great way to be.  He dropped off some things at the studio the day before (he has the advantage of being a West Bloomfield Laker and he lives close by) and we had a great game plan.  We started on location in Birmingham with an earlier start than originally planned based on the weather forecast since we needed to beat some rain… so we’ll start there.

Bold Business

Our first spot was on the industrial side of town – bold and edgy!  Brandon’s mom Suzanne came along too and she is a delight!  She was helpful as Brandon’s assistant too – see?  Benefits!  Hehe…

Bold Business

Good look on that kid!  Love the grungy spot.

Next we turned to a bit of a more upscale scene – love the scope of this photo – Brandon in the city!

Bold BusinessAt this point we started to feel raindrops, so our timing was perfect – just as we were wrapping up in Birmingham…  At this point it was time to head back to the studio, but before we do that let’s take a look at a little behind the scenes action from the day.  First we have our Vine for your 6 second looping pleasure:

Next we have the extended replays of the live Periscope broadcasts from the session!  You can follow our broadcasts live on Periscope at this link or on Twitter as well!  First the location broadcast:

And now back in the studio…

Being Brandon

So here are a couple of great photos from the studio – first with a casual look reppin’ the WBHS!

Bold Business

And last but not least, the formal shot… all GQ like…

Bold Business

And there you have it!  Bold business indeed being Brandon, and it ain’t so bad!  We hope you enjoyed these highlights from our day!

A Frameable Day Starting in Detroit & Ending in Birmingham!

We had a fun and Frameable day two days ago that started in downtown Detroit and finished up at Social Kitchen and Bar in Birmingham!  It was such a great day that we just had to pop onto the blog and talk about it!

Class of 2017 spokesmodel season in full swing

We headed out with two new spokesmodels from the class of 2017 to get some photos in Detroit and it was an epic day with Aria and Maya along with their moms and Aria’s little sister Sedona, complete with burgers for lunch in Corktown at the Mercury Bar.  We spent some time photographing the girls at The Belt Alley which was our first time doing a session there.  We will have plenty more to come from the session but here’s a little behind the scenes fisheye shot made with my iPhone and an Ollo Clip.

Frameable Day

Frameable Day

After we finished our day we had dinner plans with some friends at Social Kitchen and Bar in Birmingham.  We had been meaning to get there for some time since we had heard nothing but great things about it and the owners are clients of ours with a current class of 2016 senior – Cooper.  Let’s just say all the great things we heard were true.  The food and the drinks were amazing – Ally got the sea bass and I got the short rib French dip sandwich.  I also had a Social Mule to drink which was amazing….  and speaking of drinks, the bartenders were former seniors of ours!!!  Mark and David from the class of 2012!  We hadn’t seen them in a while and David’s name had just come up in conversation recently…  Crazy!

Here are a couple of photos from their sessions which were both done in Birmingham:

First Mark – this was the original fence shot we did…  Hard to believe these two sessions took place over 4 years ago already…

Frameable Day

Next David – a night time shot using off-camera flash with the rain starting to fall…

Frameable Day

And here we are with them the other night!!!

Frameable Day

With former Senior Friends Mark and David at Social in Birmingham!

So much fun!  Great weather, great city, great spokesmodels, great food, and a great little reunion!  A truly FRAMEABLE DAY!!!

Meditations on Buying Local…

BUY LOCAL – you hear this everywhere right? Save our local economy! It’s pervasive. There are facebook and LinkedIn groups devoted to the idea, politicians throw the issue around to try to make each other look better than the opponent knowing that it’s an emotional hot button for their constituents, businesses remind you at every turn almost as a sales pitch to get you to come in and buy something in their store. You start to become numb to it.

Listen – it’s certainly an important issue to us being a local business ourselves but I like to buying localkeep these posts a bit lighter and more fun. I don’t want to be a downer and I certainly don’t want to get on a soap box to beat you over the head again to shop local….. (hmmmm wait Doug – this isn’t a typical light fun Frameable Faces blog post – seems you already went there). Sorry. Big exhale….. Okay – I’m just gonna go with it then. But I’m going to try to make it as painless as possible.

The 3/50 Project – Pick 3 and Shop Local

The fact is there were three different things that put this in my head this week in particular which is why I’m thinking about it and felt the need to blog about it. The first thing happened at our last Orchard Mall tenants meeting. One of our fellow tenants alerted all of us to a project and website called The 3/50 Project whose mission is to strengthen independent brick and mortar businesses. What I like about this is that it appears to be a very sensible and practical call to action. The “3/50” part refers to the suggestion that everyone pick out 3 local businesses they would miss if they closed and commit to spending $50 per month collectively at those businesses. The studies suggest that for every 100 dollars spent at a local business 68 of them return to the community. For every 100 spent at a national chain only 43 stays here, and for every 100 spent online none of it stays here. Makes you think.

Don’t Forget Your Favorites

The second thing happened in Birmingham the other day while we were there photographing a senior. We drove past the Varsity Shop which is a sporting goods store that has been there since I was a kid. It is a small corner store that certainly would seem to be a relic from a bygone era when you compare it to stores like Dick’s and The Sports Authority not to mention Target, Meijer, Wal-Mart and all the other big box stores who sell sporting goods. I don’t know the people at the Varsity Shop and I haven’t been in there forever. I don’t know what they specialize in and I have no stake in spotlighting them, but my point is when I pondered how they’ve managed to stay in business when so many others couldn’t it dawned on me – they certainly didn’t do it because I shop there. I felt a pang of guilt – I have good memories of that place and they deserve better from me. Now to totally beat myself up over this isn’t fair because I do buy local – a lot. And with online commerce and the economies of scale that a Target or a Costco brings to the table I’d be nuts to not make sure I looked for the best deals from time to time as we try to support our family with a still-young business in this wonderful economy of ours. Indeed, the 3/50 Project doesn’t suggest you stop buying from chains, they just suggest that you make sure your healthy balance includes a helping of local merchants. I personally think I can do better and I’m going to buy something from the Varsity Shop when I get a chance. Meanwhile the Orchard Mall is filled with many local merchants. We’ve got a Panera here sure (love their breakfast power sandwich – hold the ham, extra egg), but we’ve also got a couple local eateries, a very cool local toy store, a couple boutiques, a linen store, clothing stores, a bridal couture, a dance studio, a locally based supermarket chain, a jeweler, a gift shop, a few spa/salons – all local. Most of the businesses here are local and not many malls can say that.

Seek Out Local Vendors and Partners

The third thing that happened was we received a nice thank you gift from a Michigan based company we order our albums from called Finao (the link is to their blog and much of it is targeted at their clients who are professional photography studios like us – lots of shop talk). This made us feel great and appreciated – this company really gets it. A very inspiring move on their part. It makes us happy to do business with such a great company and it gives us even greater comfort that they are based in Michigan and everything they produce is made from stuff made in the USA. This is not by accident – we have always made a point of using local vendors for the business wherever possible and most of our vendors – our framer, our printer, our canvas folks and many others are based in Michigan.

So, I suppose if I had to give myself a grade with an “A” representing a full commitment to spending as many of my dollars as possible with local businesses (within reason), and being conscious of it whenever I make my choices of what to purchase, I would probably give myself a “B”. I can do better. What about you?
