A Superb Studio Session That Was All About Alana!

Sometimes simplicity just works.  Let me explain what I mean by that. Ally’s approach to portraits has always been about the people, the faces, the expressions, the personalities.  Sure we love our sessions where we go to interesting locations and get beautiful scenery or gritty urban photos, but we’ve always maintained that regardless of how exciting the location is, it has to come back to the subject – the people, the Frameable Faces.  It’s for this reason that a stripped down approach in the studio with a black backdrop can provide plenty of rewards, and that was certainly the case with Alana for her senior photos.

Family Tradition…

Meanwhile Alana’s grandfather Al was my Godfather and our families go back about 5 decades, so having Alana here was really special and a bit surreal too.  She looked great and we’ve known her since she was born.  Her mom Holly has known me since I was born, so there’s that circle of life thing….  So you get the picture right?  So enough chat – let’s get to Alana’s beautiful photo shoot shall we?  We are starting (and staying) on the black…

All About Alana

So pretty right?

Before we get to the rest of our sneak peeks let’s look at some behind the scenes footage – first with our fun 6 second vine:

Now let’s look at the extended replay of the live Periscope broadcast we did during the session.  If you haven’t downloaded the app and followed us there you can do so at this link.  It’s like Frameable Faces TV!

Normally we would have the video embedded in the post right here, but due to a technical difficulty we seem to be having with this particular video on YouTube, so you can go to this link to watch it at our Katch.me page instead.  Enjoy!

All About Alana (and a little Eureka)

Okay so let’s look at the rest of the photos:

All About AlanaLove that half length shot and this next black and white shot of our “black and blowy” set up…

All About Alana

Such a dramatic look and we love this look on Alana!  We’ll leave you now with one more photo this time with Alana and Eureka!

All About Alana

Awww – a girl and her pup.  Haha!  So there you have it – a simple and superb studio session that was all about Alana (and a little Eureka)!  We hope you enjoyed these highlights!

A Super Senior Session Encore With Super Mario!

Everyone loves Super Mario.  No really – like everyone loves this kid.  He’s the real deal – personable, hilarious, thoughtful, smart and good looking.  He is one of our spokesmodels for the class of 2016 and we’ve really enjoyed getting to know him over the past year and in fact through Mario we’ve met several siblings and his parents, sampled some of his mom’s cooking – heck, we feel like part of the family!

Well we feel like Mario is part of our family too and we were looking forward to an encore from his spokesmodel session for his senior portraits.  You will see from the behind the scenes footage (especially the Periscope broadcast from the studio) that we laughed a ton and spent some time creating a special….shall we say, “non traditional” senior portrait to go with the more traditional stuff.  We’ll save that treat for the end of this post.  Feel free to scroll down if you can’t wait, but for starters we’ll focus on the “normal” photos.

Super Senior Session

We’ll start our super senior session in the studio with the blue/grey backdrop…

Super Senior Session

We love this guy.

Next let’s get into a formal look of the black suit, black tie, black background – love the black on black in the studio!

Super Senior Session

Now before we head outside you can get a taste of the super shenanigans that took place in the studio with Super Mario – first with our 6 second looping vine:

Next we have the extended replay of the Periscope broadcasts where the Super Mario Brothers Goomba almost stole the show in the studio…  You can download the app and follow us on Periscope (and just about everywhere else) at @frameablefaces at this link:

Now let’s head out to the location shots – first at the grotto:

Super Senior Session

Mario’s faith is a big part of who he is and that shot says it all.

Okay one more outdoor casual shot in a natural setting…

Super Senior Session

We are big fans of that little footbridge…

Okay so now for the fun grand finale… our Super Mario themed composite shot!  Hehe…

Super Senior Session

Yes that’s actually Mario – not just his face, and yes the characters were actually photographed by Ally too…  Hilarious right?

So there you have it!  We hope you enjoyed these highlights from Mario’s Super Senior Session!

A Sensational Senior Session With Samantha!

We enjoyed a sensational senior session with Samantha recently on a perfect day here in West Bloomfield!  Samantha is a delightful and soft spoken girl but she’s got a great little sarcastic streak too which we enjoyed a lot!  We had a great game plan for some studio photos and some on location which is a very common approach for us with our seniors.

Sensational Senior

We started on location and hit a few spots around West Bloomfield so that’s where we’ll start with the highlights…

Sensational Senior

Beautiful right?  Let’s take a second here to give a shout out to Shifra Raskin for the makeup. We recommend many of our seniors to Shifra and she always does a fantastic job – she is right down the hall from our studio which is very convenient for our seniors and other clients too!

Next we headed over to one of our favorite meadows for this photo – this one is a total winner…

Sensational Senior

Stunning!!!  Sensational!!!

Before we head back to the studio for a couple of shots let’s take a look at our behind the scenes footage from our morning with Samantha.  First with our fun 6 second looping vine where Ally yelled at Samantha (haha – take a look):

Now we have the replay of the live Periscope broadcasts we did during our session from our YouTube channel.  You can download the app and follow us there (and just about everywhere else) at @frameablefaces at this link.

Back to the studio

Now let’s head back to the studio for a couple of indoor highlights where we focused on our black background that we love and it looks great on Samantha!  First with the “black and blowy” in black and white…

Sensational Senior

And now in color and on fire as you saw in the vine!!!

Sensational Senior

So there you go – a super sensational senior session with Samantha!!!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our morning with her!

Amanda Astounded Us On Her Senior Session!

Amanda astounded us on her senior session, and to be clear this isn’t because we didn’t expect it to be a great session.  On the contrary we knew she would be great – and she delivered!  We spent the day with Amanda and her mom Lori who guest hosted part of the Periscope broadcast as you will see below and it turned out to be a perfect day overall!

Amanda Astounded

This session was almost exclusively on location in Birmingham so that’s where we will focus for these highlights.  We started out on the south side of the Quarton Lake Park on the other side of Maple Road where we were able to get the last of the black-eyed susans – just a beautiful shot of Amanda surrounded by all that bright yellow!

Amanda Astounded

Before we move on to the rest let’s take a look at our behind the scenes action from the day.  First with our fun 6 second looping Vine:

Next you can watch the extended replays of the live Periscope broadcasts we did during the session with Amanda’s mom Lori guest hosting for part of it!  You can download the app and follow us here!

Now let’s get back to a few more of the photos!

At this point we headed back to the north side of Maple where we got this next shot that you saw us setting up at the beginning of the broadcast:

Amanda Astounded

Amanda looks stunning and the shot is so pretty with the purple all around!  Next we moved over to the waterfall to use it as a backdrop…

Amanda Astounded

And we’ll leave you with this close up…

Amanda Astounded

Astounding!  Yes – this was an astounding session alright and we hope you enjoyed these highlights from our day with Amanda and Lori!

A Senior Session Takeover Of Detroit With Ian!

We are loving Detroit.  This is the most exciting time for Detroit in our lifetime by a mile.  There is so much going on down there and it’s no accident that we have now done two senior sessions in “The D” this year.  The first one was at the Dequindre Cut, and the second one we present to you here.

Senior Session Takeover of Detroit

Ian came to us with very specific ideas about the type of shoot he wanted.  He wanted to takeover the city and he wanted certain landmarks and a certain style.  These can be the most exciting and rewarding sessions to be sure, because everyone is excited, everyone is planning and preparing and in the end this session was a series of firsts for us.  Ian went straight suit and tie – a formal look with Belle Isle and art deco stalwarts The Guardian and Fisher buildings (both built in 1928 three years before the Empire State Building in New York City) as our backdrops.  Lots of personality and great taste with this guy!

Meanwhile Ian’s mom Susan came with us and she guest hosted some of the Periscope broadcast we did on location which you’ll see below.  So let’s get to the photos shall we?  We started out at Belle Isle which has improved a ton since it was turned into a state park – very clean and a pleasure for hanging out.

Senior Session Takeover

This close up of Ian is at the James Scott Memorial Fountain which was completed in 1925 and it really is a wonder.  It’s really cool to see it running!

Next we were able to capture this cool photo with part of the Detroit skyline in the background!

Senior Session Takeover

Now let’s look at our behind the scenes footage from our day in the D with Ian.  First our fun 6 second looping Vine:

And now the Periscope broadcasts both from Belle Isle and The Guardian Building:

On To The Guardian…

Next we headed over to the Guardian Building.  We were in communication with the building management all week to get the proper documentation for permission to shoot in the lobby and had a scary moment when we arrived and the lady at the front desk said they don’t allow photographing that day, but I knew I had the approval and our contact came down to the lobby to give us the green light.  The lighting certainly posed a challenge and we came prepared with our off camera flash but it still wasn’t easy!  We got some great shots and we’ll share two of them here…

Senior Session Takeover

Just incredible design in there and the colors are awesome!  Now for one more in black and white before we say goodbye…

Senior Session TakeoverLOVE that one.  A fitting end to an amazing day in the D with Ian!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!

An EPIC Detroit Session With Emma At The Dequindre Cut!

We’ve been saying for a long time that we love Detroit.  And we’ve been saying for a long time that we love Emma.  So the idea of photographing Emma in Detroit seemed like a winner, and when Emma and her mom Teresa suggested heading down to the Dequindre Cut we got excited.  We had read about it and seen a few photos from various Detroit blogs, but I’m here to tell you that it’s really cool having been there now first hand.

Epic Girl…

Emma is one of our spokesmodels for the class of 2016 so you may remember her spokesmodel session with us earlier in the year.  She’s an incredible dancer and a smart and wonderful young lady – we’ve been proud to have her representing us.  We spent this entire morning in Detroit, complete with a stop after at the Bucharest Grill for the best chicken shawarma in town, but I digress… let’s get to the photos!!!

Epic Detroit Session

We’ll start at the Dequindre Cut and we’ll stay there since we never left!  So much to work with… Epic Detroit Session

Love the color coordination here – Emma becomes part of the mural!

As I mentioned the Dequindre Cut is so cool and we were so excited to be down there shooting, so we captured much of our time there with behind the scenes photos and broadcasts on Periscope!  Let’s take a look – first our fun behind the scenes Vine to give you an idea:

Now here is the three part replay of the live broadcasts we did that morning with Emma’s mom Teresa acting as guest host at times!  She was a real trooper on a hot day after just having shoulder surgery!  It goes for about 37 minutes if you’re inclined to watch, or even if you just want to watch some of it!  Download the Periscope app and follow us here, and in the meantime sit back and enjoy…

Okay let’s get back to a few more photos shall we?

Epic Detroit Session

Love it!

Commissioned graffiti and murals all over the place with people jogging, walking, biking…

Epic Detroit Session

More color matching with Emma’s blue going together with the blue behind her!

We’ll leave you with one more of Emma truly reppin’ the D with the Detroit vs. Everybody shirt!

Epic Detroit Session

So there it is – an EPIC Detroit session indeed with one of our all time faves!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our morning in the D!!!

Jacqueline’s Senior Session Was Jam Packed!

We love being at the point where we have so many legacies coming to us for senior photos, and this is the second younger sister in a row on the blog!  Jacqueline jumped in some photos with her older sister Melanie last year so we got to know her a little bit and together with mom Andrea we really enjoy these girls!  If you click on the link to Melanie’s session you’ll see that they could be identical twins even though they aren’t!

With Jacqueline we took a slightly different approach than with Melanie, not spending quite as much time in the studio and heading to a different location before ending up at their house like we did last year.  Let’s start with a studio shot on the black background shall we?

Jam Packed

Love it!

Jam Packed…

From here on out it was all location and we jam packed plenty of ground into the rest of the shoot.  Before we get into the location photos let’s take a look at some behind the scenes footage from our day.  First with our fun 6 second vine:

Next we have the replay of our broadcast on Periscope with Melanie guest hosting at one point for her little sister’s session!  So fun – you can download the app and follow us at @frameablefaces here.  Meanwhile here is the broadcast which we posted on our YouTube channel.

Now let’s take a look at our location photos!  Jacqueline looks beautiful in these!

Jam Packed

That’s the shot we spent a good amount of the time getting in the broadcast!

Jam Packed

Love that close crop from the covered bridge at the same location, and let’s look at one more close up back at the house…

Jam Packed

Stunning!  And there you have it – Jacqueline’s jam packed session – jam packed with beauty and awesomeness!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Alexis Astonishes With An “Ablazing” Senior Session!

Is “ablazing” a word?  Ablaze is, but technically “ablazing” isn’t, and guess what – we don’t care, because we think it describes Alexis’s session just fine.  It had fire and it was amazing, so……..ablazing!!!  Boom!

Alexis’s mom Lisa is frequently at our awesome little mall and she is a sweetheart so we weren’t surprised to find that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  Alexis is a charming, soft spoken and beautiful young lady and her session was indeed astonishing, amazing, ablazing and well, whatever other positive adjectives beginning with “A” that you can think of (and maybe even some other letters too)!  So let’s get to some highlights shall we?

Alexis astonishes

We started in the studio with the black background with a nice simple pretty shot of Alexis:

Alexis astonishes

And the astonishing begins…!

Next it was time to turn up the heat and get the session ablazing with some fire!!!  Alexis is a lacrosse player and we love setting lacrosse sticks on fire…

Alexis astonishes

Fierce…

Let’s take a look now at some behind the scenes footage of our day – first with our fun 6 second vine:

Next here is the replay of our Periscope broadcast from our YouTube channel!  Be sure to download the app and follow us here!

On location…

Next it was time to head out to Quarton Lake and it was a beautiful day – actually it was Ally’s birthday and what a great way to spend part of it!  First let’s see the “across the lake shot” which is really pretty…

Alexis Astonishes

And lastly just a nice pretty simple close crop of Alexis that we’ll leave you with:

Alexis Astonishes

So there you have it!  Alexis and her “ablazing” session!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Kalin Was Killin’ It On Her Senior Session!

Kalin killed it on her senior session.  I mean like….slayed it, rocked it, owned it – just think of any verb that’s good and she did it.  And she became one of our favorites from the very moment she walked in for her consultation!  I may say a lot of our seniors are our “favorites” but we just really love them and Kalin has been back to hang out and visit since her session.  We just really connected with her!  She’s personable and funny and we enjoy her a lot!!!

Kalin Was Killin’ It

This session ended up being broken up into two days due to a thunderstorm.  Kalin’s mom Chris came to the session on Thursday and her dad Doug (like that guy – he’s got a good name) met us on location on Saturday as well.  We had a blast!  Let’s take a look at the studio shots first:

Kalin

See what I mean?  Love that one in black and white…

Let’s bring in a little color to the proceedings with Kalin on our purple background:

Kalin

Fun!  Kalin is a sweetheart and it comes through in her smile, and the color of the dress looks great against the purple.

Now let’s take a look at some fun behind the scenes footage from the session before we head to our location.  First with the vine:

Next we have the replay of the live broadcast we did of part of the session on Periscope from our YouTube channel!  You can download Periscope here and follow us at @frameablefaces!  Be forewarned that there is a lot of photography talk with the audience for the studio part of the broadcast while Kalin was doing an outfit change and the connection was jumpy in spots, but it’s still fun.  The location portion of the replay starts at almost the 13 and a half minute mark where Kalin’s mom Chris takes over as guest host for a couple minutes!

Now let’s look at our location shots!  We had great conditions at Quarton Lake in Birmingham two days after our studio time and these two photos are sensational!  First relaxing on a bench…

Kalin

And we’ll leave you with this one amongst the trees…

Kalin

See what we mean?  She killed it which is just slang for she did an awesome job – ha!  We are so happy we met Kalin and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Magnificence, Merriment, and Mayhem With Mara!

Magnificence, merriment and mayhem was the order of the day with Mara on her senior session!  We’ve known Mara for a long time and used to be in a car pool with her and her mom Lisa, but we hadn’t talked to or even really seen Mara in years, so when this beautiful and quick witted young lady walked into the studio we were blown away!  Plus we had photographed her older sister Rebecca a few years back for her senior pictures and she’s one of our faves (you can see a photo of her here – she’s the one in the 10th photo), so anticipation was high.

Magnificence

So let’s get to the magnificence!  Mara is also just flat out funny which is where the merriment comes in.  We spent much of her session cracking up and you’ll get a little sense of that in a bit.  Meanwhile with the exception of the yearbook headshot we spent the entire time in Birmingham to get both urban and natural shots – let’s start downtown:

Magnificence

Great photo right?  Love this girl.  Let’s take a look at one more in the city:

Magnificence

Love it when a little breeze cooperates with us giving her hair a little lift!

Now let’s head over to Quarton Lake for this stunning photo…

Magnificence

Great breeze, great backlight – pure magnificence indeed!

Now let’s take a look at our fun behind the scenes vine of the day where more “merriment” and the “mayhem” began… There was a construction site with a big Caterpillar truck and a gentleman doing some work in the construction zone who was more than happy to create a little noise and dust for us – and I mean that sincerely – we asked him to!

Our new friend also let us play with the Caterpillar a little which yielded this fun photo that we’ll leave you with:

Magnificence

So fun!  So there you have it!  A little mayhem, a lot of merriment, and ALL magnificence with Mara!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day!
