Showing Off Some Senior Pics – Yes We Are Brandishing Brandon!

To brandish is “to wave or flourish (a weapon) in a triumphant, threatening, or ostentatious way” and in this case we are brandishing Brandon – his senior photos that is, because Ally’s “weapon” is a Canon 5D Mark III, the photos are awesome, and so that does make this indeed a “triumph”!  At least we think so…  Haha!

We photographed Brandon’s sister Lindsey for her senior session a couple years ago (not to mention for years before that for her dance photos) and we’ve known Brandon for a few years so we were happy to get the call from his mom Michelle that they were returning!  Brandon is a great kid – soft spoken but driven and we enjoyed being with him a lot!  So let’s get to the photos…!

Brandishing Brandon

We started out in the studio on the black background and this first photo is great in black and white!

Brandishing Brandon

So cool…

We also have some behind the scenes action for you – here is the replay of our studio broadcast on Periscope – if you want to be a part of our live broadcasts there you can download the app and follow us at @frameablefaces at this link, and if you prefer to just watch from twitter you can do that here.

Now let’s continue to our location photos in Birmingham where we got some natural photos and some city photos – we’ll start with the natural setting…

Brandishing Brandon

There was a little chill in the air on this day but overall the conditions were fine and the lighting was great…  We broadcasted a little more at this spot, this time on Facebook Live, and it was around this time that Michelle had to run back to the van to get something – she had a little trouble with the car alarm and she caused a bit of a ruckus… haha!!!

One more by the stream…

Brandishing Brandon

Awesome!

At this point we headed over to downtown Birmingham to get some brick and textures where we captured this close up:

Brandishing Brandon

And there it is – brandishing Brandon – triumphantly as the definition suggests!  We think his session rocked and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!

Hey Hey Haley – Your Senior Pictures Are Highly Awesome!

Hey hey Haley!  We are excited to have this girl on our blog!  Another long time friend of our daughter’s whom we’ve known for years, Haley is a sweetheart and our families are friends.  So this was another one of those surreal sessions which seems to be a recurring theme this year….  lol!  This session was complete with several wildlife adventures and provided for plenty of hilarity and some hiccups – like actual hiccups!  But at the end of the day it was about the photos and it was about Haley so let’s get to the pics shall we?

Hey Hey Haley!

We started in the studio with one of our fancy chairs and the black background – love this!

Hey Hey Haley

She looks amazing!

We didn’t spend a ton of time in the studio but we do have a behind the scenes broadcast replay from inside that we did on Periscope – you can download the app and follow us at @FrameableFaces at this link or you can just watch from Twitter here.

Time to head outside…

Hey Hey HaleyWe love these types of photos in the meadow – we had just a hint of fall pop in the background and the lighting was really nice – the conditions were great that day!  We have plenty of behind the scenes from the location(s) too, starting with a broadcast replay from Facebook Live:

Before we get to the last couple of photos we are including here the Snapchat story from the session because, well…..it’s funny (remember I said something about wildlife adventures)!  Plus you’ll also see where the fam jumped in for a photo!  Stuart, Donna and Maddy!

Here’s another fab photo from outside…

Hey Hey Haley

Sooooo pretty!

One more broadcast…

….and one more photo of Haley!

Hey Hey Haley

Yasssssss!

So once again we say hey hey Haley – your session was highly awesome!  We hope you all enjoyed the highlights from our day with Haley!

Elizabeth Elicits Oohs and Aahs On Her Senior Session!

We’ve known Elizabeth a long time going back to elementary school days with our daughter and we hadn’t really “hung out” with her in a while.  We’ve seen her around town sure but this was so much fun on so many levels – for starters when she came in for her consultation we were struck by how grown up she had become and how much she sounded like her mom Lorie!  So cute – totally like a mini Lorie.  She’s a sharp cookie and an athlete – the girl has it all, and we knew this would be a fun session.  You’ll see below as Elizabeth elicits oohs and aahs!

Then, when she showed up the day of her session made up and ready to roll she looked beautiful!  That’s where the oohs and aahs started (haha).  And what was really cool was with their busy schedules it worked out better for her dad Adam to come to the session and we really had a great time.  Conditions were great and so off we went!

Elizabeth Elicits Oohs and Aahs…

We started in the studio and did a little shooting on the black background with our “black and blowy” setup – this is a great one to start with:

Elizabeth Elicits

Great huh?

Meanwhile here is the first of some behind the scenes broadcasts we did during our day – this one is from Periscope and you can follow us and be a part of the broadcasts at this link or you can just watch from twitter as well by following us there at this link:

Now as we get set to head outdoors for some location photos let’s have a little fun with the Snap story we posted that day on Snapchat!

Now it’s time to head outside for the location part of the session, and here we’ll give a little shout out on the makeup by Francie Paull Fruitman!

Elizabeth Elicits

Love the meadow photo…

As you see from the title of the second Periscope we were out there in the “golden hour” when the sun is going down and the lighting is amazing… and we have that little pop of fall color that we love!

Elizabeth Elicits

We also have a little more behind the scenes action too from Facebook!

And we’ll leave you with this last photo from the session…

Elizabeth Elicits

So we were happy to share and have Elizabeth elicit more oohs and aahs from you all!  We hope you enjoyed these highlights from our day with her!

Caitlin (and Patrick) On A Perfect October Day For Senior Photos!

So this is indeed the story of Caitlin’s senior session which took place on a perfect October day in Birmingham, Michigan!  But Patrick was a welcome addition and companion and he helped make the session even more fun!  Patrick is a girl’s best friend – a young Collie with plenty of energy, and he posed quite nicely for a couple of shots!

Meanwhile we enjoy Caitlin a lot and her mom Deborah is a delight too!  We had plenty of fun and laughs on this bright sunny and warm day!  Actually the warm weather lasted much longer than usual this year and that made for more days like this deeper into senior season than you can usually expect…  Besides, Caitlin’s session was almost all on location so we got to enjoy a beautiful day.

Caitlin (and Patrick)…

Let’s start with the girl and her pup:

Perfect October Day

So fun!!!

Here’s the replay of the live Periscope broadcast from this part of the session.  If you want to be a part of our broadcasts in the future you can download the app and follow us at @FrameableFaces here, or you can just watch from Twitter!

Next we moved over to a couple of our fave spots to focus on the girl with the awesome red hair for the rest of the session…

Perfect October Day

Perfect October Day

Ooooh that backlight though!

We went live for another Periscope broadcast while we were at it too…

….and time for another outfit change!

Perfect October Day

We took to Facebook Live as well for some more behind the scenes fun as we moved into downtown Birmingham – check it out!

We’ll leave you with this last photo from the city…  love the lamp post shot!

Perfect October Day

And there you have it – a perfect October day with a fantastic girl!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Doing The Dew In The D With Jayson and a Few Murals!!!

When you do a senior session and you also dew the session, and you dew Detroit, and you do cool stuff with a cool dude named Jayson, then you know you’re really do(dew)ing it well!  Doo be doo be doo and da doo doo doo da dah dah dah….  okay let’s not get carried away with the play on words here.  Focus Doug.

The fact of the matter here is Jayson is a cool dude and we had a colorful session with him in Detroit.  There are murals all over the place down there if you know where to look, and if you throw in a little Mountain Dew pop art logo tee (and a random cabbage – that’s an inside joke from the session) then you come up with photo gold and the colors just pop all over the place.

Doing The D With Jayson…

Detroit was the plan for Jayson and his mom Korlyn came with – this was our second time with Korlyn on a shoot after our awesome shoot with Jayson’s brother Riley and we knew this would be a fun day.  We started out on Belle Isle for this black and white photo…

Jayson

Love the occasional black and white for that timeless quality!

We also have plenty of behind the scenes action to share – we’ll start with the Facebook Live broadcast we did from Belle Isle!

Next we went “mural-ing” I guess you could say.  We found some great stuff over in The Belt to start with, and this is where Jayson was “Doin the Dew”:

Jayson

Lookin’ good!!!

Now we have the link (there was an error in tweeting it for some reason) to the Periscope broadcast we did in Detroit.  You can follow us while you’re there and join in the shows in the future to be a part of the fun!

Here’s another one from downtown before we headed back to the studio:

Jayson

Love it.

After a little lunch down by the Wayne State campus with older brother Riley joining us we headed back to the studio.  We also did a Periscope broadcast in the studio and what was cool about this one is we did it on our show “The Photo Shop” which airs on @ParachuteTV1 every Tuesday at 2PM EST UTC-4!  ParachuteTV was the very first network on Periscope and you can check the programming schedule at the website here.

And we’ll leave you with a photo of Jayson from the studio…

Jayson

Love the blue!  And there you have it!  Doin the D as in Detroit made for a great day with Jay and we hope you enjoyed the highlights!

Haven Is A Fashion Maven Which She Proved On Her Senior Session!

Haven is indeed a fashion maven and she proved it on her senior session.  Let me explain:

Fashion Maven

Some posts just write themselves….  We’ve had awesome style and fashion from our seniors this year and with Haven we were not surprised – she has represented our studio for the class of 2017 as a spokesmodel (just like her sister Jubilee did) and we love this girl!  I thought it might be fun to rhyme Haven with maven and when I punched it into a Google search “fashion mavens” showed up right in the definition.  Done deal!

Haven Is A Fashion Maven…

So we started this session with the always fashionable cheer uniform – ha, and I don’t mean that sarcastically at all.  Haven actually had some great stuff in store for the location part of the shoot, but as for the studio we love us some purple, black and silver when it comes to those Bloomfield Hills Blackhawks!!!  Whoo hooo!!!

Fashion Maven

And while we’re here in the studio here is the replay of our live Periscope behind the scenes broadcast!  If you want to follow us from your smartphone and be a part of the shows in the live chat you can do that here, or if you just want to watch from twitter you can do that here.

Next we’ll head out on location and check out this next photo – Ally was particularly impressed with the accessorizing, the boots, the whole thing!

Fashion Maven

We have another fun Periscope broadcast from the location too – here ya go…

Here’s where we found out how strong Haven’s hashtag game is…haha – well, we’ll just let the picture tell the story….

Fashion Maven

How great is that top?  Haven walked out with the #slay on and we knew she meant business!  Love it!

Here’s the Facebook Live broadcast from that moment!

We’ll leave you with one more fabulous photo from the day…

Fashion Maven

Spectacular!  We had such a great day with Haven our fashion maven and we hope you enjoyed the highlights from our day with her!

Jake Was The Symbol And The Superhero Of This Senior Session!

When Jake came in for his senior consultation with his mom Jen we proceeded to have a fun and healthy debate about superheroes.  Now actually I’m not really a superhero guy and I quickly found out that I was pretty overmatched, but I think I hung in there…..kinda.  In any event Jake is clearly inspired as millions are by superheroes – Batman and Iron Man in particular.  So I went searching around and found this awesome quote from Batman Begins:

Bruce Wayne Quote

I think this quote is appropriate for this photo session for a couple of reasons…  For starters I think this whole idea applies to photographs in general.  Photos can preserve a moment, a person – they can be everlasting.  That’s part of the appeal of what we do here whether we’re making new photos or restoring old ones.  Senior pictures capture such a cool time in a young guy like Jake’s life!  So hold on to that thought for a minute and we’ll come back to it…

Jake The Superhero!

Let’s start with the Batman inspiration in the studio for our first sneak peak…

Superhero

Awesome.

Here’s the behind the scenes vine from the day….

We also did plenty of broadcasting that day on Periscope and Facebook Live.  Okay maybe we went a little crazy – I’ve actually done a collab with Jake’s mom Jen who is also known as Princess Pinky Girl online so she’s a natural on camera as was Jake!  Much fun!  If you haven’t downloaded Periscope yet you can do it and be a part of our broadcasts here or you can just watch on twitter here.

First in the studio:

Next it’s the first of our location broadcasts at Heritage Park:

And here is one of our shots of this fine young lad in the great outdoors…

Superhero

Let’s see a little more of our behind the scenes from Facebook Live – we actually spent a lot of time cracking up on this session…  Jake is a funny dude.

And here we have a shot of Jake chillin’…

Superhero

Lastly I want to bring it back to that Batman quote from earlier.  Here’s where it ties it all together….

Bruce Wayne said as a symbol he could be incorruptible.  He could be everlasting.  That’s what we achieved with Jake on this last photo which was a first for us, and an idea that Jen brought in.  It’s a silhouette that captures the spirit of being a senior – with your life ahead of you.  Incorruptible.  Everlasting.  Arms up to the sky!  This photo could be anyone.  You can’t necessarily tell it’s Jake, and yet it IS Jake.  A symbol – and a powerful one at that….

Superhero

So cool….

Here’s the behind the scenes of us creating that photo!

And that’s the story!  Jake was the symbol and the superhero and we will always remember this session!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!

Like An Expressive Melody, This Aria Is Aptly Named!

According to Wikipedia, an aria started out originally as any expressive melody usually performed by a singer.  In a culture where our names don’t always mean something (as famously pointed out by Butch in Pulp Fiction) this is a case where it does and it works for this girl!  She is a sweetheart who has been a friend of our Lacey’s since they were toddlers!  She’s bright, beautiful and nice – like an expressive melody indeed!  As one of our spokesmodels for the class of 2017 this is the second time we’ve been able to get out on location and photograph her this year alone, but she’s been in front of Ally’s camera several times over the years!  With her mom (and our friend) Rachel along for the ride, it was another fun and epic day!

Aria Is Aptly Named…

This session was almost exclusively on location and our Aria was prepared with makeup done by Mandy Rose from Mandy Rose Studio – little shout out here to Mandy as she does amazing work!  Aria was stylin’ too and with that said we should get to a few of the photos…

Aria

Beautiful!

Now let’s mix in some behind the scenes fun from the day, first with our 6 second looping vine:

And now let’s see one of the replays of the live Periscope broadcasts from the session!  If you aren’t following us on Periscope you can do it and be a part of our broadcasts in the live chat here, or you can just watch on twitter here.

We also did a quick Facebook Live broadcast while we were at Heritage Park too – take a look:

….and here’s a fun photo from the blue door in the broadcast above!

Aria

Love that one…!

At this point we changed locations to head over to Birmingham to get a few city shots.  Here’s a cool one in the alleyway:

Aria We also broadcasted one more time for some more behind the scenes fun in Birmingham on Periscope!

As we near the end of the story we’ll leave you with one more of Aria on the stairway – step by step we know she’ll be smiling the whole way!

Aria

And there you have it!  Aria is truly a melody of a girl and she’s aptly named for sure!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!

Doug’s Rant: Twitter Stickers, Photos on Social, Apps Chase Apps

Yes it’s been a while since I’ve posted a rant!  Let’s do this….

Twitter Stickers

Twitter Stickers

You may have seen Twitter’s recent announcement about the new “stickers” feature which allows you to add emojis and other things to your photos.  Fortune points out the obvious play on Twitter’s part to keep up with Snapchat with a headline that gives the new feature a positive spin.  Meanwhile the Wall Street Journal is completely and inexplicably oblivious to the chasing of snapchat with a slightly-less-than-flattering headline about Twitter….  Note in particular the second paragraph in the WSJ article about the other “communication” apps with stickers.  C’mon….  Really?  ZERO mention of Snapchat there?  That’s amazing.  I’m not totally sure how I feel about stickers yet since I haven’t used them but I have plenty of thoughts and you can look at this from a few different perspectives which we’ll get to.

A Couple Thoughts On Social Photography…

Meanwhile as photographers the ongoing debate of whether iPhone pics and the ease of entry is “ruining” the industry is an interesting one to us.  This article on Popular Photography while not overtly addressing the big picture in that regard seems to come from that mindset, claiming that using Twitter stickers is a way to “completely ruin your photos”.  I always find these types of opinions a little troubling.  We’ve always embraced the idea that the more people appreciate everyday photography the more they will appreciate professional photography.  We’ve always looked at Snapchat and Instagram as opportunities to have fun just like everyone else and we actually use them to highlight aspects of what we do at Frameable Faces.  To call attention to stickers being a way to ruin pictures is silly to me.  If you take a picture you don’t want to ruin with a sticker, then DON’T ADD A STICKER…… duh.  Right?  Maybe the fun you can have with stickers can help you build community to draw people in to see the stuff that is meant to stand on its own without the stickers.  We actually covered this topic today on our photography show “The Photo Shop” on @ParachuteTV1 on Periscope if you’re interested in taking a look.

Social Media Apps chasing Other Social Media Apps…

So while the photography studio owner in me doesn’t have a problem with stickers, the social media guy in me might.  Here’s what bugs me a little about them – keep in mind that I have not used them yet.  This is an overall statement about social media platforms that I think applies here, even though I may be admitting soon that stickers are the greatest thing to happen to twitter (although I doubt it).  I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong…

Here’s my issue.  Each time a unique social media platform adds a feature to chase and become like another platform, it blurs the lines between platforms that make them cool.  I like the different uses for each platform.  I like the different etiquette and the different cultures of the different apps.  Here are three other examples I thought were somewhere between silly and annoying when they rolled out and still do:

  • Facebook hashtags  Good try Facebook but you are NOT twitter.  Hashtags totally flopped on Facebook – they just really don’t belong there in my opinion.
  • Instagram video  I believe Instagram did this as a reaction to Vine at the time.  I can’t stand videos on Instagram.  There was nothing “insta” about pausing while scrolling though the pics in the feed to watch a 15 second video and now the videos can be up to 60 seconds – good grief.   I know not everyone agrees with me on this but it is my rant…
  • Periscope sketch  Rolling out the ability to sketch on the screen while you’re broadcasting was, well…sketchy.  I can only conclude that this was a way to chase Snapchat (?) even though the two are completely apples and oranges.  Sonia Figueroa is the only scoper I’ve seen who consistently makes me smile when she draws hearts on the screen to “give them back” to her viewers (she’s one of my faves), but at a time when everyone was waiting for other more practical features this was a bit of an annoyance.

So there it is…  had to do it.  Thoughts?  Are you using Twitter stickers?  Can you think of other app fails from apps chasing apps?  Please comment, share your thoughts, and share this post!

Doug’s Rant – Why Is Social Media “So Quiet”?

So quiet

Why is social media so quiet lately?  It just doesn’t seem to me that there has been a lot going on.  Let me explain.  For a few solid years there it seemed like it was the “golden age” of major platforms – such as:

  • Facebook Pages switched over to “likes” from fans in April 2010 a month after we set up the Frameable Faces page.
  • Instagram launched on October 6th, 2010 and we joined it in May of 2012.
  • Pinterest launched in April of 2010
  • Snapchat launched in September of 2011 (more on that in a minute).
  • Google Plus pages for businesses launched in October of 2011 and they added Google My Business last June.
  • The major Twitter redesign launched in April 2011.
  • Vine launched in January of 2013 and at the time we had to wait until June for Android since T-Mobile didn’t have iPhones yet.

Since then……not a whole lot.

All of those platforms seem to still be thriving and growing as a general rule and it has now been two years by my count since a new “major” platform has made a splash.

Is a lull a good thing?

I can’t decide if I like the fact that it’s been a little quiet or not.  The thought of feeling like I have to manage additional platforms can be stressful especially if we are only adding more and not dropping any, but the rush of starting out on a new one is exciting and a lot of fun.  For example I was pretty excited about Pano Perfect which I thought might be the next big social photo sharing platform but that one has gone nowhere…  I hear people talking about Swipe and sure there are others.  We can debate all day about what a “major” platform is – I am not using any scientific criteria here…  I’m just ranting after all.  Feel free to jump in in the comments and add your two cents.  What do you think is the next big thing?  I want to know.

Meanwhile Snapchat is the one I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.  Of the big ones I listed it’s the one that we don’t have an official Frameable Faces profile for, and after weighing it I don’t know if it’s right for us as a brand at least for the moment.

Edit*** – A Curve Ball

I wrote that last paragraph earlier today and one of our spokesmodels just happened to pop in to the studio and we were chatting about Snapchat since it was on my mind, and I think I just changed my mind again.  She showed me a couple things that convinced me that it could be a good platform for us.  For example I didn’t realize how it notifies you how many people have viewed your snapchat stories and which people viewed them.  So look for it – my wheels are turning now!

So as it turns out I have Snapchat to work on.  I started out wondering why it’s been so quiet in social media, but now that I’ve got another platform to play with I’m hoping things stay quiet for a bit!
